A Billboard That is Actually Useful

utec-billboardBillboards are so annoying. It seems to me that they are just giant eyesores that line the highway on your way home at night. When I was in Ireland recently it was a joy to drive around and not see those big metal monsters, just the beauty of the terrain. There is an exception to almost every rule though and I have a cool example for you.

A school in Lima, Peru has developed a billboard that provides drinking water to the local citizens out of thin air. Seriously, out of thin air. You can watch the school’s video on the project here. I’m certainly not a science whiz so I can’t tell you all the inner workings of this magical machine, but I can sure admire it.

Turning something that is typically a blemish into an enormous community benefit is inspiring. A billboard that is actually useful – what a novel concept. Do you have an idea that could change your community?

Yes it is Linda. Isn’t the creativity to create something like this refreshing and encouraging? I thought so.

Very neat. I’m an engineer, so it’s interesting to me. An air conditioning system takes humid air, draws the humidity out, and returns dry air, and water. It does take energy, and I didn’t see the details, but I am sure that it’s worth it, energy wise, to get the water that isn’t available in other ways. Solar panels could be an energy option (if they’re not already). Lima needs to look at this extraction technology on a much larger scale, as the quantities mentioned are quite small for a city of that size. Good start, though.

Agreed. Like someone said in the video, they could put these billboards up by the dozens in Lima. What an incredible idea.

This is so cool. I bet if people thought about it there are lots of ways to make billboards more beneficial. However, where we live they are mostly along the highway so no one EVER walks by.

Yeah. It was one of those inspirational stories for me. Someone had a brilliant idea and the mechanical knowledge to turn something that is otherwise an annoyance into something that changes lives. It makes me want to do something amazing and beneficial for others too. How cool.
